Announcing Metatron Discovery: A new open source business intelligence platform powered by Druid

Today, I am extremely excited to announce Metatron Discovery, a new open source business intelligence platform powered by Druid.

We first began working on Druid from SK Telecom for a few years, we’ve been proud to contribute the project grow and take on a life of its own. Our initial goal was to enable users to arbitrarily explore and aggregate data, and have visualizations update as fast as users could navigate through the data. We needed a data store that could support interactivity at scale. We experimented Druid and was impressed its great performance. But we found Druid is not easy to use for business users and some required features are not included; user defined column, join, statistical query etc. Metatron Discovery came into existence to fill a gap in a difficulty of Druid and real world of users, and so users can explore data without breaking their workflow, streaming data ingestion so events can be explored immediately after they occur, and complete flexibility in how data can be explored.

After we open sourced Metatron Discovery, we expect people know their data easily. We’ve come a long way over the past few years in terms of self data discovery and we are still discovering new possibility of Metatron Discovery. As the Metatron Discovery community has grown, we will also learn about what we can do better. There is still plenty of overhead to learning the system, tuning it properly, and properly monitoring things in production. Thankfully, we now have the opportunity to build Metatron Discovery for the world.

We’re happy to announce that we are open sourcing Metatron Discovery sponsored by SK Telecom from South Korea. With this sponsorship, we will be devoting our energy to make it as easy as possible for people to use Druid and build beautiful data applications on top of it. Our product is ready for download today. The platform is completely free and open source, and is designed to make Druid much easier to install and use.
